Children’s Books Classics & Favorites
Here are a few of our favorite classic and beloved children’s books — wonderful for bedtime reading, early childhood development, and magical storytelling moments. At The Book Loft in Oak Park, we’re proud to feature these timeless titles your little ones will return to again and again.

Goodnight Moon
A calming, timeless bedtime story first published in 1947. In a “great green room”, a little bunny says good night to every familiar thing—from the moon to the mittens to the socks—until the room grows quiet. Ideal for bedtime reading, helps children wind down and feel secure; simple language + comforting rhythm.

Where the Wild Things Are
A picture book classic, originally published in 1963. Max, dressed in a wolf suit, is sent to bed without supper; his room transforms, he sails to an island of “Wild Things”, becomes king, then returns home to find his supper waiting. Encourages imagination, explores emotions like anger and reconciliation, and remains a beloved staple for children’s literature.

Hansel & Gretel
A celebrated fairy tale originally collected by the Brothers Grimm in 1812. Siblings Hansel and Gretel are abandoned in the woods, stumble upon a witch’s house made of sweets, outwit the witch and return home safely. A classic adventure with themes of cleverness, courage and homecoming; perfect for slightly older children who can engage with fairy-tale plots.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar
First published in 1969, this children’s picture book has become one of the most loved across generations. A tiny caterpillar hatches and eats through a variety of foods, then builds a cocoon and emerges as a butterfly—introducing counting, days of the week and metamorphosis. Combines fun interaction (holes in pages where the caterpillar “ate”), educational elements (counting, days, nature) and beautiful artwork.
